Have you ever wanted God to answer you? Would you recognize His voice if and when He did? Our God promises to always answer our prayers and needs, but it isn’t always in the way that you may want. Sometimes, the answer is so clear and loud that it could not be anyone other than God. Other times, God answers in a way that may surprise you, a quiet voice that comes out of the din of life, a voice that we must start to recognize as our Creator.
Our God is a God of many miracles, including the miracles in which He presented Himself to humans throughout history. God has presented Himself in dreams, through a burning bush, in a pillar of fire and cloud, a thunderous voice, as well as many other ways. However, when He presented Himself before Elijah He used a different method altogether.
In 1 Kings 19, it states, “Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (verses 11-13). God appeared not in any of the physical miracles that were happening around Elijah, but instead in a still small voice simply speaking to Elijah. This was not because God could not appear in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but because He chose not to. As with Elijah, God can and will use a still small voice with us when He needs to directly communicate. God’s divine nature does not need to be a huge miraculous event to get our attention, nor should we come to expect that.
God’s still small voice is a message to us that He is listening and that He loves us. It can also show us that God works in all ways, not just in the grandiose. That voice could be found in any moment and even through other people using the Holy Spirit. God knows exactly what you need and sometimes that is just a gentle reminder, just don’t forget to listen for it.
