Tomorrow we will look at the subject of loneliness and what the bible says about it. Being lonely has been something that has been part of man since Adam. You would think that in a society that is so well connected through technology that we would be less lonely but it’s actually the opposite. Demographics show that those who use social media the most are the most lonely in society.
Loneliness Is an overwhelming feeling of lack of connection to others around them. This can be family, coworkers, or even friends. God even recognized the need for people to have companionship with Adam and created a helper, Eve, to be his companion in life.
Loneliness may not seem like a big deal to some but since the social media age it has increased to the point where some countries like Japan have declared it a public health crisis, because they are loosing 30,000 people a year to suicide. The main cause is their own loneliness and isolation. Even for those who are dealing with it and still living with it in isolation it is the equivalent of smoking 15 cigarettes a day. They are also seeing direct links to dementia and mental decline. Those who live with it every day have elevated stress hormones and inflammation, which ove all lead to a shortened lifespan. Oftentimes dealing with it means making poor choices such as substance abuse or sinful behavior.
The reality is loneliness will always be a part of the human condition. Even at their closeness with God, Jesus and Adam still needed physical relationships to thrive on. It’s important to a body in Christ, including our church to help in those areas according to His will to help those who suffer from it.
In doing so we may also be helping ourselves in the same process! So be mindful of those who sometimes just need a friend or an ear to talk to. In doing so you are a blessing to them and you please God.
Happy Sabbath!
Your Brother in Christ,
Steve Koenig
