The God who is there

A few weeks ago I found a movie called “The Final Voyage” made by a German film company in 2019. This film wasn’t one of the better Sci-fi films out there but I found it interesting and inspiring in an unusual way.

The film plot centers around two men who escaped a prison planet in an abandoned ship found in the desert there. They got off the planet and had to decide what to do next. One kept finding numbers that were coded all over the ship. He thought these were codes to get them back to Earth. The other wanted to keep going into space and find somewhere better, believing that there was no more Earth to return to. Eventually the ship landed on a remote gold planet. In searching for something that wasn’t there one of the men died there trying to justify the belief that this was a place he was supposed to find.

Again not a great movie, certainly it could have been better overall but I found myself wondering what it would be like to be in that situation. To land on a planet far away from Earth and every known thing and how I would handle it. Interestingly while watching the one man stuck in a cave inside this remote planet the thought occurred to me that “God would be there too.” In the height of loneliness and despair for the actor in this situation I was taken back that thought would enter my mind.

It’s funny sometimes how God reminds us in pleasant ways that he is always there. He will always be there. No matter what state you’re in or where you are. Even if it happens to be many light years away from Earth!

It may seem I got too much into the movie, and sometimes we all do. More importantly these thoughts to anyone are a reminder of his commitment to us and also our belief in him! His commitment is ongoing. Oftentimes we forget it’s there or don’t embrace it until a difficult time in our life. Even then we sometimes have to look for the truth beyond what we see at the time, even forcing ourselves to when the carnal person wants to look only at the problem.

In return the mere fact we acknowledge his presence anywhere we are is a comfort to a person who believes. More importantly it is a sign of someone who believes! The fact that knowing he is present shows us that we believe! In that mere instance we can be comforted in the fact that we do believe in Him. So many, including the character in this movie, likely do not have the same belief. Being a believer you could imagine how lonely it is not to know that God is there, always!

So rest in the knowledge that God is there. We can be upset, sad, angry, alone, desperate, in trouble and even happy and blessed. Regardless He is the God who is there.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with these people into the land that the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall put them in possession of it. It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” – Deuteronomy 31:6-8
