Passover or Communion

On April 11 and 12th, a good number of Christians will be observing what the Jews commonly refer to Passover. A holy observance where that in the past and still for Jews commemorates the night before they left Egypt free from slavery into the care of the Lord. Christians who keep the same observance do it in honor and symbolism of being in Jesus Christ as believers in Him and having Him live in them with the Holy Spirit. Larger Christian denominations observe this on a regular basis with the same meaning in the partaking of the bread and the wine.

The most important aspect of the convocation is who it pointed to all along. Even in the days when it was first observed it always pointed to deliverance. Today it points to the One who ultimately delivered us from death, but being a substitute in our place for sin he never committed.

We are still sinners in this life and all those who have been alive did for them to save us from the penalty we deserve. It is an act of love.

John 15:13 says No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life for his friends.

That’s what he did for us. To free us to live a life in him, not of the world.

While we tend to look at our own sins and feel we can overcome them we need to be reminded that he gave His life for us because we needed Him to save us from them. We could not do it ourselves. Even the sacrifices made to Him were no substitute for obedience. They did not purify us of what we do against Him. Only true repentance from the heart and acknowledging Him as Lord does.

Ephesians 2:11-13 reminded those who were outside of Christ previously that being so there is no hope and in His blood they can now have hope for deliverance and reconciliation with God.

11 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called “uncircumcised” by those who call themselves “the circumcision” (which is done in the body by human hands) 12 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

Remember whether you observe the modern Passover or Communion it was Him that this was all about from the beginning and will remain so. We cannot overcome our sins ourselves but only in Him can we be forgiven of them. He wants us to have eternal life as God’s children and overcoming this world will get us there just like He did. He told us to be of good cheer because he set that example for us to follow and those in Him will do so.
