Counting 50 Days

It is hard to believe that the spring Holy Days are behind us and we are speeding towards the next one. Recently one of our members displayed a countdown sign showing how many weeks had passed since we were told in the Bible to count 50. She was very excited about the Holy Day to come and its annual observance. The excitement is refreshing because oftentimes churches will overlook this day or not put the right enthusiasm behind it. I was actually pleased to see how many churches still observe this day in their own way knowing it had a significance to Jesus Christ and His church to this day.

The day is Pentecost, which in its meaning itself means “count 50.” In the New Testament era This signified 50 Days from Jesus Christ’s resurrection to the specific day. During the time from His resurrection to Pentecost Jesus spent 40 days with His disciples teaching them about many things about the days to come. After He had ascended to Heaven 10 days later, they were told to gather together in one place. At that point in grand display the Holy Spirit was given to them to dwell in them. Many went on from there to preach the Gospel and perform many works in Jesus Christ’s Name.

Also of high importance this day was the beginning of the Church. No longer was worship done in a temple for believers but now it was done from within. We now worship Jesus Christ in truth and Spirit. The church was now a physical building but a spiritual organism under which Jesus is the head. Worshiping Him in truth and Spirit means it cannot be hidden through rituals but is something evident in our Hearts and minds.

It is always good to reflect on the idea of counting 50 days to Pentecost. At that time it was a call to gather at a certain place. Forever forward it is the beginning of the Church under Jesus Christ.

This makes Pentecost yet another wonderful day to be celebrated for God’s people and the worship of our Savior!

In Christ always,
