Although it hasn’t been as noticeable and promoted like it has in past years, we are once again coming up on what is now known as “pride month.” A month that has been set aside for certain people for celebrating lifestyles and behavior away from what God has intended. In recent years it has not been something that everyone seemed to embrace as they did in previous years. This is for several reasons including a distancing from that behavior as a whole as some of that behavior has resulted in extreme immorality and offense. Tennessee when as far as changing the month to “Nuclear family pride month” going back to celebration the traditional family.
How does God feel about pride? Some will say that the bible frown on it as a whole. That you must do everything in a steep humility. But the reality is, God does not condone any pride that exalts the self. When pride lifts up the self it becomes a clear path to destruction for that person or persons. Pride like that is also blind to the truth. For those who have prideful ways like that it is like stepping out into a highway and pretending the cars will not hit you! However, God does approve of certain areas of pride that lifts a person up in a holy way.
Boasting in God is one way we can be prideful. Jerimiah pointed this out in Jerimiah 9:23-24
“Let not the wise boast in their wisdom or let the strong boast in their strength or the rich boast about their riches, but let one boast about this: that they understand and know me. That I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, Justice, and Righteousness on earth for these I delight, declared the Lord.”
Paul wrote some very pointed things in his letter to the Galatians as they had many problems in their own church at the time. Among them was deception and pride. Paul was trying to steer them onto the right kind of pride: Galatians 6:3-5
“If anyone thinks they are something when they are now deceives themselves, each one should test their own actions, then that can take pride in their actions alone., without comparing themselves to anyone else, for each one should carry their own load.”
As the saying goes, pride comes before a fall. But is the worship of God it is a good thing to be proud of the relationship you have with your creator and in the things He allows you to accomplish in your life. It is Him who gives us everything.
