If you read the book of Psalms in the Bible you will see a striking amount of wisdom and inspiration in those written words. Each verse contains something to glean from and to inspire us in our daily walk. Oftentimes we zero in on key passages in Psalms but we neglect many more that can be inspirational to us as well. Psalms 92 is one of those that often gets overlooked.
Psalms 92 is one that often gets overlooked by people but contains deep inspiration for those who spend time digesting what it means. This Psalm was the only one written for the Sabbath Day specifically. It is also the only chapter to mention the Unicorn. It is one of continual praise for God and how he blesses his people:
Psalms 92:
1 It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto Thy name, O Most High.2 To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night,3 Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound.4 For thou, LORD, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the works of thy hands.
5 O LORD, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep.6 A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this.7 When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed forever: 8 But thou, LORD, art most high for evermore.
9 For, lo, thine enemies, O LORD, for, lo, thine enemies shall perish; all the workers of iniquity shall be scattered.10 But my horn shall thou exalt like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.11 Mine eye also shall see my desire on mine enemies, and mine ears shall hear my desire of the wicked that rise up against me.12 The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.13 Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God.14 They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;
15 To shew that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
Many people do not realize that the Sabbath was lost when the world began to creep into the church and dictate how people lived their lives. For many years people worked 6 day work weeks. oftentimes working well into the 7th day to make ends meet. Sometimes that 7th day was the day people used to keep up with needed chores or recreation. The purpose of the Sabbath was lost. People argue that it was done away with and it was not necessary to observe it. We See even Jesus Christ said the Sabbath was made for man, not the other way around.
Although the modern era has seemed to lose the purpose of the Sabbath day rest it is still something that is important to God. Reading the Bible we see that it wasn’t placed in with the laws of the Israelites or the Jews but placed in the 10 Commandments. This means it was for all of mankind. It is a day of rest away from the world and a day to be with God and his greatness. The person who wrote this psalm found it inspiring to see that while his enemies were put down, They as well as all of His people continued to flourish.
Sabbath rest gives us many things. A day off from the everyday cares of the world. It gives us a much needed rest. It gives us focus on our life needs. And more importantly it gives time and ability to contemplate God’s greatness and power. While we can do this during the week, an entire day devoted to it shows us how wonderful God is and how wonderful it is to be his people.
